Shin Splints (Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome)

Not all shin pain is “shin splints”

What’s Going On?

Pain along the front or inner part of your shin—especially after running or exercise—often means your lower leg muscles and bone have been overloaded.
This is called Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (MTSS), a common overuse injury caused by too much activity, too soon.
If ignored, it can progress to stress fractures of the shin bone.

Common causes include:

  • Sudden increase in training or running load
  • Poor footwear or worn-out shoes
  • Overpronation (rolling inwards) or high, rigid arches
  • Tight calves or weak hips and glutes

Hard surfaces or poor running technique

What We Did Today

  • Assessed your foot mechanics, leg alignment, and muscle tightness
  • Identified contributing factors such as footwear, training load, or mobility
  • Provided relief through stretching, massage, and activity advice

Discussed footwear and support options (orthotics if needed)

What Happens Next

  • Begin the home stretches and strengthening we discussed (especially calves and hips)
  • Avoid high-impact activity until pain settles—swap running for cycling or swimming
  • Review footwear and bring your runners to your next appointment
  • We’ll reassess your progress and make adjustments to your plan (orthotics or gait retraining if needed)

Remember: Early treatment means faster recovery and a safer return to exercise.

Book your follow-up to get back to training pain-free and confident.
