Shin Splints (Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome)
Not all shin pain is “shin splints”
What’s Going On?
Pain along the front or inner part of your shin—especially after running or exercise—often means your lower leg muscles and bone have been overloaded.
This is called Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (MTSS), a common overuse injury caused by too much activity, too soon.
If ignored, it can progress to stress fractures of the shin bone.
Common causes include:
- Sudden increase in training or running load
- Poor footwear or worn-out shoes
- Overpronation (rolling inwards) or high, rigid arches
- Tight calves or weak hips and glutes
Hard surfaces or poor running technique
