Bunion Pain and Treatment: What You Need to Know
What Is a Bunion?
A bunion—clinically referred to as hallux valgus—is not simply a bump on the side of your foot. It represents a change in the alignment of the big toe joint, where the big toe drifts toward the second toe instead of remaining straight.
This shift causes the joint at the base of the big toe to become enlarged and prominent. Over time, the deformity can worsen, leading to discomfort, swelling, and difficulty with footwear. Because bunions are progressive, they generally do not improve on their own and can affect the smaller toes as they adjust to accommodate the big toe’s position.
